Girls Basketball honors Akyra Murray ’16 at halftime

The Girls Varsity Basketball team honored Akyra Murray ’16 at halftime of the home opener on Tuesday December 13th. Akyra was a 2016 graduate who tragically lost her life in the Pulse Nightclub shooting on June 12th.

Akyra was the youngest victim of the shooting and graduated from West Catholic just a week before her death. Akyra was one of the most prolific scorers in West Catholic history, scoring almost 1200 points in just three seasons and graduated ranked third in her class. Akyra was committed to attend Mercyhurst University where she planned to play basketball for the Lakers.

“It felt really good. I was happy to finally play my first varsity game in honor of Akyra,” said one player. “Her presence was here, I know she’ll be proud of this game. I miss her dearly. We put it all on the floor, we left everything out here.”.

The Lady Burrs made Akyra proud winning over Kipp Charter by a score of 67-8.
