Academics : The Essay
The application essay, as frightening as it may seem, actually works in your favor! It is a means for you to “show” yourself. The college will receive a copy of your transcript. The transcript will show your final grades throughout your high school career and the scores on your standardized tests. The essay allows you to depict yourself beyond numbers and gives you a chance to review and revise – showing yourself in the best light (transcripts don’t give you this option)!
Obviously, not everyone represents the top ten in their graduating class. The essay grants you the opportunity to express your personality (which everyone, regardless of rank, possesses)!
It is okay to write how you talk. I don’t necessarily mean slang, but don’t feel you need to impress admissions counselors with “big words.” Write how you converse. Be natural. Tell your story – remember it is your story, so there is no wrong answer! Don’t stifle your creativity. If you have talent, show it! This is also true for those gifted in the arts (include a portfolio, a video, or a tape of your work).
