News : Letter to the West Catholic Family from the Alumnae Association
West Catholic High School Alumnae Association
To: The Members of West Catholic High School Community:
My thoughts and prayers are with the West Catholic High School Community today.
West Catholic High School has a long history. I was fortunate to be part of it for many years. I graduated from West Catholic Girl’s High School and returned in 1971 to teach History. Excellence was a tradition. Students learned academics as well as respect for themselves and their fellow classmates. The school was God centered. Colleges and universities awarded million of dollars in scholarships and grants to seniors on graduation day. Many of these same students had come to “West” in freshman year lacking basic skills. West Catholic High School is and was a wonderful school with devoted teachers both Religious and lay.
In1989 West Catholic Boys and Girls schools were merged and the new West Catholic High School was formed. The Friends of West Catholic Board was created. The group was made up of caring and concerned members who raised funds and made suggestions. Over the years, tuition became so expensive that most people in the area could no longer afford it. Enrollment dropped. Teachers and courses were cut. Mr. George Light, Development Director, did an outstanding job but in today’s financial market, it wasn’t enough. We were spared the closing of West Catholic in 1989. The school continued to exist for 22 more years. I am most grateful to the men and women that continued to support West Catholic High School over the years.
West Catholic Girl’s Alumnae Association will continue to raise funds to educated Catholic students in the future. The “Harvester” will continue to update former graduates on dates of reunions, annual luncheon and the Communion Breakfast. We thank you for your support and will continue to do our best to serve you and the West Catholic community. “West is Best” is our motto. In the hearts of all graduates, West is and always will be the Best.
Keep the Administration, faculty and students of West Catholic High School in your prayers. God is good .He will give them the graces that they need during this trouble time.
Sincerely,
Helen Sheridan, 1955
