In Loving Memory of Father Mekonnen
Father Addisalem Mekonnen joined the West Catholic family in the autumn of 2023. He quickly assimilated into our school’s culture, and welcomed the challenge of deepening and strengthening the spiritual life of our students. Father and Mrs. Foley tackled the demeanor of students' behavior at full school Masses. This dynamic duo presented the proper behavior acceptable to each Theology class and emphasized the importance of respect for the liturgical ritual. In a few months time, the behavior of the students improved in a drastic measure. Spurred by this victory, Father Mekonnen and Mrs. Foley approached the need for deep and sincere participation in students’ retreats. Beginning with the freshmen, each class was asked to establish a purpose and initiate activities that emphasized this theme. From service in the junior retreat to appreciation of the Miraculous Medal of Mary in the senior assembly, the activity took on a deeper and stronger meaning on each level
Father Mekonnen continued to challenge our students to branch out to stronger service projects. On alternating Tuesdays. Father, Mrs. Foley, and the students of the outreach program visited the elderly at the Little Sisters of the Poor. There they would mingle with the residents and participate in the weekly bingo games. Father was considered a “good luck charm” by many of the residents and sought his presence at each game. This gentle priest also enjoyed the Tastykake Cupcakes that came at the end of each session.
In his last liturgy at West Catholic, Father spoke of one of his childhood memories and how it connected with the Advent theme of waiting. As he finished the liturgy, he wished all a Merry Christmas and Happy and Healthy New Year. We, at West, remember these words with joy and sadness. Father Mekonnen, rejoice in the Halls of Paradise and remember your family at West Catholic Prep. We will deeply miss you. Godspeed.
