Gaining a Mentor
Rebecca Niboi ’24 Interns with Marita Malloy Hutchinson ’64
At the Blue and Gold Society Reception in 2022, Student Ambassador Rebecca Niboi’s life journey took a promising turn when she was introduced to attorney Marita Malloy Hutchinson ’64. She asked for Marita’s business card, opening the possibility of connection and mentorship.
“I’ve always been interested in learning more about a career in law, so when we were introduced, I was excited to hear from Mrs. Hutchinson what her journey was like,” said Rebecca. “I got up the courage to give her a call and was excited that she remembered me! She invited me to shadow her on a case—I was nervous and excited but she walked me through the whole process.”
No one at West Catholic Prep was surprised by Rebecca’s proactive outreach to Marita—she is an active student involved in cheer, Lasallian Interact, student council, flag football, photography club, and the cofounder of the African Student Association. She also deeply values her faith and relationship with God.
The first case Rebecca shadowed was at the West Chester District Courthouse. Witnessing the intricacies of legal proceedings firsthand, Rebecca found herself captivated by the intensity of the court case. Marita provided guidance and clarity—and even let Rebecca hold her briefcase so she looked the part! After court was adjourned, the pair took the opportunity to debrief over lunch.
Rebecca later returned to the courtroom to witness Marita win a long-fought criminal case. Rebecca’s interest in law remains strong as she weighs her options after West Catholic Prep. She is considering local and out-of-state college options, each holding the promise of new opportunities and experiences.
“I was immediately impressed with Rebecca. She clearly is a smart, outgoing young lady and I am happy to mentor her,” said Marita. “I was also moved by the encouragement of her parents. Her mom made sure she had a new suit to wear to court along with, of course, her Ghana pendant necklace.”
Rebecca’s parents emigrated from Ghana over 20 years ago. Because of their hard work and sacrifice, they were able to send her and her younger siblings to Catholic schools, and remain committed to providing their children with a quality faith-based education.
Whatever path Rebecca follows after graduating from West Catholic Prep, we know it will be a bright one. As Rebecca's journey unfolds, one thing remains certain—her determination to make a difference in the world of law and beyond.
