Class of 2017 Hall of Fame Inducted

On December 7th, 2017 the West Catholic School community celebrated the induction of 6 alums into the 2017 West Catholic Hall of Fame.  Following the presentation, a luncheon was hosted in the Learning Commons where the inductees and their family and friends could enjoy each others company and celebrate the occasion.  For short snippets of the inductees biographies as well as photos from the event, please see below.

Monsignor Donald Leighton ’52 – Service to the Church

Monsignor Donald Leighton is a West Catholic Alum from the class of ’52.  Monsignor Leighton served as Assistant Pastor at numerous parishes throughout the area.  Monsignor Leighton also served as Pastor at St. Patrick’s Church where St. Theresa of Calcutta came to St. Patrick’s to open up a shelter and soup kitchen in the parish convent.

Later Monsignor Leighton served as Pastor at St. Josephs Church, and currently serves as Pastor at St. John Vianney Church in Gladwyne.

Jack and Mary Pat Follman ’55 – Business and Loyalty to the School

Jack and Mary Pat are members of the class of 1955.  They have been married for 58 years, and have 7 children, 20 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Jack currently serves as Chairman of the Board for Atlantic Underwriting and Wharton Surety Consultants.  He is also a member of the Board of Advisors for Day and Zimmerman Group.  Jack has held the position of Director at numerous businesses in the financial services industry over the course of his career.  Jack also served in the US Marine Corps with the rank of Captain.

Mary Pat has spent 45 years volunteering at St. Philomena, Sts. Simon & Jude and St. Katherine’s of Wayne Paris.  She has also worked with the township election services for 20 years.

Sister Mary Flynn ’55 – Service to the Church

Sister Mary Flynn is a member of the class of 1955.  Sister Mary Joined the Immaculate Heart of Mary nuns 4 months after her graduation from West Catholic and received degrees from Immaculata and Rowan university and holds certificates in Elementary education, Secondary Education and Counseling.

Sister served as teacher in numerous parishes in the Area, and as Principal at St. Edwards, and St. Dorothy.  She also served as Guidance Director at Conwell Egan, Hallahan and St. Huberts.

Most recently, Sister served as the Assistant to the Director of Admissions here at West Catholic.

Edward Baxter ’63 – Law

Edward Baxter is an alum from the class of 1963.  After graduating from Law School Ed joined Schnader Harrison Segal and Lewis where he eventually became partner and served as Chairman of the Tax Department.  In 2000 he joined the law firm of Cozen O’Connor where he has served as the head of the firm’s Corporate Practice Group and Chairman of the firms’ Business Law Department.

Over Ed’s 46 year career he has represented large international companies and has been named a PA Super Lawyer by Law and Politics.  In addition to practicing Law Ed is an adjunct professor in Law at Temple teaching a course on Mergers and Acquisitions.  Ed and His Wife Pat (also an alum from the class of 1963) currently are Parishoners at St. John Vianney Parish where Monsignor Leighton is Pastor.

Ed is the chair of the Parish Council, and is involved in the awarding of Saint John Vianney scholarship which provides financial and academic support to children in need that are involved in their community and motivated to excel in school.

Kyrus Freeman ’95 – Law

Kyrus freeman is an alum from the class of 1995.  Kyrus is a partner in the Washington D.C. Office of Holland & Knight.  He is involved in numerous aspects of real estate development with a focus on land use, zoning, and municipal law.  Kyrus also serves as LEED AP, which means he advises clients on green building requirements and compliance methods.  Kyrus also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Caucus and Center on Black Aging Inc, as well as the Housing Management corporation.  Kyrus also serves as a Board of Director for the AppleTree Institute for Education Innovation, which is an educational non-profit.

Mr. Freeman has also received three degrees here in West Philly.  He is a graduate from St. Francis DeSales, Graduate of West Catholic, and a University of Penn Graduate.
