In November and December, five colleges/universities came to West Catholic Prep for “College Instant Decision Day” — a growing trend that gives college admissions representatives a one-day opportunity to meet personally with students at their high schools to review their applications and materials and potentially offer them instant admission. And, here at West Catholic Prep, the five visiting schools found more than 50 students who are not only intellectually ready for college work, but also have the ambition to contribute to a challenging academic environment.
Manor College, Cabrini, Immaculata, Holy Family, and Shippensburg Universities were among the schools to recently visit West. There was a total of 75 college acceptances among the 53 West Catholic students who participated – pretty impressive! One of those students included senior Noah Thomas, who learned about the event through West Catholic Prep’s Director of Guidance, Mrs. McGill.
“Our entire guidance department has been incredibly helpful throughout the college process and we really appreciate that West offers this opportunity,” said Noah. “They are always willing to go the extra mile and make sure our applications are thorough and well-prepared. Noah said students are also often notified of scholarship opportunities available to them.
College Instant Decision Day offers a low-stress friendly environment (in their own school!) where students can put a face to the name on their application and ask and answer questions. After talking with the student and reviewing the student’s material, the representative will give an application decision. In some cases, the student is admitted on the spot—in others, they are given instructions for what to do in order to be admitted. Students say this process is easy and widens students’ horizons as far as schools that are out there. And the decisions aren’t binding, meaning they don’t have to accept on the spot and are still free to apply to other colleges and universities.
“Instant Decision Day is a win-win for students,” said Colleen Brandt, West Catholic Prep College and Career Counselor. “They don’t have to pay an application fee and wait weeks for their admission decision to come in the mail. Instead, they are able to go to school in the morning and come home with a college acceptance.”
Noah was proud and excited to be admitted to Immaculata University and Shippensburg University and feels his experience at West has set him on a path for success. “I felt like all of my hard work to do well in high school paid off,” he said.
“It means a lot that the school works so hard to make sure we are prepared for life after we graduate,” he said. “West Catholic is filled with people who all drive themselves to find success and that becomes infectious. I’m more prepared because of my time here.”
Noah says his experience at West Catholic has been warm and welcoming and has shaped him to be more in tune with his faith and himself. “This environment has exposed me to individuals of more diverse backgrounds,” said Noah. “That exposure has helped me to better understand different perspectives and viewpoints. And now I feel I am more prepared for success in college.”
Congratulations to all of those who were accepted!
